*This does NOT apply to:
Visits that occur in Tennessee
Inpatient hospital care / IBCLCs who work under an in-network doctor
As of May 1, 2025 The Lactation Network (TLN) will no longer be billing for lactation care provided by any private practice IBCLC in Alabama, regardless what state your Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance is through.
BCBS of AL (majority of insurance coverage in Alabama) will not work with IBCLC's directly, and only allow doctors to be in-network. This leaves us with no options to be able to provide care through TLN, forcing families to pay out of pocket for visits and seek reimbursement.
Your insurance's lactation coverage hasn't changed, but you will no longer be able to have visits with an IBCLC, that does not work under a medical provider, at no charge in the state of Alabama due to TLN's agreement (or lack of agreement) with BCBS. You can contact your insurance directly to inquire about reimbursement amounts, if there's any limits to coverage (how many visits are allowed), and what is needed to be submitted to receive reimbursement.
Visit the links for more information on self-pay rates and how to submit information to your insurance company for reimbursement.
Please know, if there was something we could do to change this, we would. We will continue to advocate for you and your babies to have breastfeeding support, because you all are the reason we do what we do.
