Baby weight loss & weight gain

Updated: Nov 26, 2024

Most babies lose weight after birth. Typically they stop losing and start gaining by day of life 5. Babies should regain their birth weight by days 10-14 or be gaining 1oz/day! Often times when breastfeeding problems arise, and the "answer" is to "just continue what you're doing as long as baby is gaining weight" or to feed formula without any further guidance in how to protect your breastfeeding relationship and milk supply. Fed is expected, but being able to breastfeed is a biological norm. If there's a problem with baby's weight gain, then there's likely an underlying cause. Pediatricians cover so much of a child's lifespan. IBCLCs focus specifically on breastfeeding / feeding babies from start to weaning. Please reach out to us if your child isn't gaining weight well, having breastfeeding struggles, or any other feeding concerns we could help with. We want you to meet your goals, whatever that looks like to you, without judgment or guilt.
